- First production version, accepted on 2 April 1941, with Kasei 11 engines; no armour or self-sealing tanks. From March 1942 some, and from the 406th aircraft in August 1942 all, had the Kasei 15 with a larger supercharger (often wrongly called Model 12). From the 663rd aircraft (March 1943) 30 mm rubber sheets under the wing tanks and 5 mm armour in the tail position; redesigned tail cone from August 1943. Built until January 1944; the total excludes the two prototypes and the 30 G6M1.
